The Aims of the School

We are committed to securing the best for and from pupils. Many people - children, teachers, support staff, parents and governors - all have their part to play.

We aim:

  • - to give the whole child the opportunity to achieve and be the best that they can be;
  • - to create an environment that encourages confident and enquiring children who participate fully in the world around them;
  • - to foster a caring concern for others and a respect for the individual;
  • - to develop a moral, social, spiritual and cultural awareness;
  • - to give children self-confidence and pride in all their achievements and to recognise those of others;
  • - to encourage a caring, responsible attitude to the environment;
  • - to promote equality of opportunity across all areas of school activities.

British Values

At Bridlewood Primary School we actively promote British Values, as defined under the Ofsted guidance 2014, through our school vision, ethos, agreed rules, curriculum and teaching:

‘Ensure that they and the school promote tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths (or those with no faith), cultures and lifestyles; and support and help, through their words, actions and influence within the school and more widely in the community, to prepare children and young people positively for life in the modern Britain’.

At Bridlewood Primary School we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in the community and the wider world. Underpinning this entire are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to the British Empire. We actively challenge children, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.

These values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.

To promote these values we show them democracy:

  1. Children vote for their school councillor
  2. School councillors feed back to their class and represent them in meetings
  3. Children vote for their house captain
  4. House captains lead their house
  5. Children vote for their Fairtrade representative
  6. We are a polling station, so we demonstrate the importance of the democratic process

We teach children respect for the rule of law:
  1. We have golden rules which are in a child friendly form so everyone can understand
  2. We have a system of penalties for those who do not follow the rules
  3. We have a behaviour policy which makes clear the rules and the penalties
  4. We promote moral behaviour through PHSE, assemblies and our culture

We promote tolerance and respect for those with different beliefs:
  1. Our religious education teaches children about a variety of faiths so they can understand those who are not from a Christian background
  2. In assemblies we use moral stories from a variety of cultures and faiths
  3. We model mutual respect and teach children to work together

We support and model individual freedom:
  1. Very evident in reception where children are free to choose their own learning
  2. Homework- our learning logs offer the scope for children to express themselves
  3. During lunch times and playtimes children are encouraged to express their individuality one example would be dressing up!
